A cataract is a cloudy lens in the eye.  The lens located just behind the pupil is
normally clear like the lens in a camera.  If it becomes cloudy it is called a
cataract.  Cataracts usually develop very slowly over a period of years.
Sometimes they develop rapidly.

The cause of cataracts has been the subject of much research.  Prevention of
cataracts may be nutritional with a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.  Some
nutritional supplements may be of benefit in prevention of or delaying the
development of cataracts.

Cataract surgery has developed into a sophisticated successful procedure.
An outpatient procedure with only drops as anesthesia it is one of the safest
surgeries.  Although it is a very successful surgery it is surgery with potential
complications and should be done only when it is really needed to improve
vision.
